The Acupuncture profession
The Acupuncture profession in the UK is regulated by the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) who set strict standards of education, hygiene, ethics and professional behaviour to ensure the health and safety of the public at all times. Acupuncturists additionally have to comply with the Local Environmental Health bylaws.
What is Acupuncture ?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been practised for over 4000 years, and is the oldest, most highly developed, natural, holistic medical system.
The aim of acupuncture within TCM is to treat the whole patient and to restore the balance between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual and at the same time strengthen the immune system.
Chinese medicine believes that a vital energy force called Ch'i flows through a network of channels (MERIDIANS) in the body.
In TCM, the principle of good health is the proper balance of two life forces: YIN and YANG. These two opposite and interdependent forces regulate the body's function.
When the flow of energy is disrupted, disharmony and imbalance can result in ill-health.
So whether the problem is acute or chronic, internal or external, the aim of TCM is to regulate the flow of YIN and YANG through the meridians in order to unblock the stagnation of Ch'i.
Since all illness is considered to be the result of an imbalance of energy, treatment can benefit almost any person as long as the degenerative process in the tissues of the body is not too extensive.

About Michael
Michael
Laughton trained at
This involved 3 years studying Traditional Chinese Acupuncture and Western Medicine Sciences appropriate to the practice of Acupuncture.
Your first visit could last up to 2 hours as you consult Michael about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, diet, sleep etc. This process provides valuable information about any patterns of disharmony.
The most important physical examinations are of the tongue and the wrist pulses. The colour, structure and markings of the tongue provide a valuable indication of the condition of your internal organs. By feeling your pulses on both wrists and noting their strength, rate, rhythm and other qualities your practitioner will understand more about the movement of Ch'i in your body.
Once enough information has been gathered to determine the likely causes of your problems, he can then select the most appropriate course of treatment.
The aim is to discover which energy channels need adjusting to improve your specific complaint and which require treatment to boost your overall energy and vitality.
There are about 500 recognised acupuncture points and treatment will involve the insertion of very fine, sterile, disposable needles into specific points along the energy channels just beneath the skin. The needles may be inserted for a second or two, or left in place for up to 20 minutes.
Benefit is often felt immediately. The healing process then continues to resolution and health again resumes.

Ancient Chinese credo
When the mind is detached, the place is quiet.
I gather chrysanthemums under the eastem hedgerow And silently gaze at the southem mountains.
The mountain air is beautiful in the sunset.
I drink of it as from a snow-fed stream.
It purifies me, it strengthens me, it calms me.
It becomes a river within me.
Its tributaries refresh and renew sinew, bone and marrow.
It is one with my blood In time it becomes a torrent To be summoned up as a storm upon the mountain.
This torrent is the fuel of life.
It is called by the masters, Ch'i.
